Food is the basic necessity of life. It should be pure, nutritious and free from any type of adulteration for proper maintenance of human health. Food adulteration has become a new problem in our country. Food producers, importers and sellers are using different types of chemicals and ingredients in different food items to increase their shelf life or to make them look more attractive. Many of these ingredients and chemicals are detrimental to our health. Different reports show that adulterated foods are causing serious diseases including diarrhoea and dysentery round the year. Adulterated foods also cause cancer, insomnia, constipation, anaemia, mental retardation, etc. They can also lead to heart problems and high blood pressure. Many people are dying due to food adulteration. There are also many long term effects of food adulteration. A research shows that adulterated food may interrupt a child's mental development. Most of the foods are adulterated nowadays. Milk, baby foods, fruits, vegetables, juice, biscuits, etc. are mostly adulterated. People have no other alternative but to eat them. Recently, the government and general public have become much more concerned about this issue, The government has set mobile courts to detect and punish dishonest people who sell adulterated food. Some steps are taken by the conscious people of the country. For example, they are trying to avoid some of these foods. But it is not enough. Both the government and public have to work together in order to eradicate this problem. Moreover, law enforcing agencies must be more alert.
